Vansh entered my clinic with a panic-stricken face. His eye specialist had prescribed him a spectacle for a proper vision. His eyes had become too dry due to the constant exposure to computers. His mom was also worried about him because his eyes were red and he would always complain about a burning session and pain in his eyes every time he sat before a TV for more than half an HR.
Our eyes are one of the most vital organs and need utmost care. They give us an opportunity to see the world around us. Thus, even a minor irritation in our eyes can make us feel impaired. Our lifestyles compel us to sit in front of a computer or mobile screen for most of the time when we’re awake. This leads to a lot of strain on our eyes and dryness too. In such cases, holistic health treatments and simple home remedies can be used on a day to day basis to prevent major eye diseases.
What follows is a detailed discussion on the things that Vansh must eat for healthy eyes. I hope it helps you too.
Vansh: I sit in the office all day and for that time it seems like my eyes are immune to any harm from my office computer but the moment I get home, the pain starts. In the night it’s impossible to look at anything for a long. I am really worried.
Dr. Nidhi: Your eye health depends largely on what’s on your plate. Nutrients like Vitamin A, C and E are important to prevent eye problems. Fill your plate with lots of spinach, eggs, fish, beans and other protein sources. Also, eat ample citrus fruits like oranges and lemons to prevent macular degeneration.
Vansh: That seems doable, though I am not a big fan of veggies.
Dr. Nidhi: (to Vansh’s Mom): Do you have Aloe Vera at your home as that’s one plant which every household should have. It has many anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and can alleviate sore eyes caused by overexposure to gadgets.
Vansh’s Mom: I don’t have it but our neighbors might I shall borrow a little for now and start planting them in our backyard asap. But how do we use it?
Dr. Nidhi: Mix 1 teaspoon of Aloe Vera with 2 tablespoons of cold water. Soak cotton balls in this mixture and place it on closed eyes for 10 minutes for relief.
Vansh: That’s great.
Dr. Nidhi: What you’re suffering from is commonly known as Computer Vision Syndrome and to prevent it you need to keep your computer screen at a distance to reduce the glare on the eyes.
Also, adjusting the lights and opting for softer lights can reduce the strain on the eyes. Make sure you get glasses with an anti-reflective coating as well.
Vansh: All the antireflective layers on the screen have worn off. I shall ask my manager to replace them not just for me but for all my colleagues.
Dr. Nidhi: Also remember along with the change in material practice the 20-20-20 Rule – Look away from your computer after every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds. Focus on an object that is 20 feet away to reduce the strain and fatigue on eye muscles.
Vansh: Gosh, now that’s what I was missing. I often sit in my office for staring at my computer screen.
Dr. Nidhi: When you go out, wear Sunglasses because the ultraviolet light can damage your eyesight. Too much UV exposure can increase the chances of cataract and macular degeneration. Pick a pair of shades that block 99% to 100% of the UV rays. You can opt for wraparound lenses to protect your eyes on the inside. Polarized glares are excellent to minimize glare when you’re driving.
Vansh: I shall buy a descent sunglass for myself now. That’s the first thing I will do. Will this also reduce the burning sensation and irritation in my eyes.
Dr. Nidhi: Yes, it will reduce it. Along with that cold compressions with rose water can be soothing for your eyes after a long day at work. Also, have fennel and coriander seed water to prevent an increase in intraocular pressure in the eyes which leads to glaucoma at an early age too in youngsters.
Vansh’s Mom: That’s a great doctor, we can do that. I can help him with the rose water and fennel seed water.
Dr. Nidhi: Papaya needs to be omnipresent during meals it is packed with great antioxidants such as carotenoids and beta-carotene. The fruit also has both lutein and zeaxanthin which are useful in protecting the eyes from the UV rays and prevent harm to the retina.
Vansh: I like papaya but it’s also true that I hadn’t been having it lately. Somehow, buying food always skips my mind.
Dr. Nidhi: I think it’s high time you start buying fruits for yourself. In the meantime, I shall give you another technique to soothe your eyes. It is called as Palming which is done in darkness with the palms cupping the eyes. It’s the cheapest remedy there is.
Palming soothes the optic nerve, which is often irritated. Sit in a darkened room with your elbows leaning on a table. Relax your back and shoulders, rub your hands together vigorously to warm them, and then place your palms over your eyes. Don’t press the eye sockets and don’t lean on the cheekbones. Visualize total blackness, the most relaxing color for the brain, and breathe deeply. You may see all kinds of lights, which is an indication of irritation in the optic nerve. In fact, you may not see total darkness until you have completed several palming sessions.
Vansh: That explains why I have these colorful visuals every time I go to bed. I never had a completely black visual for years now. But thank you for suggesting such an incredible technique. It makes me very hopeful about the future of my eyes.
Dr. Nidhi(chuckles): Ok, even the next remedy is free of cost. Sit with legs straight in front of your body with the left hand on the left knee. Hold the right fist above the right knee, with a straight elbow and the thumb pointing upwards. Keep your head still and focus your eyes on the thumb. Draw a figure eight with your thumb, keeping the elbow straight all the time. Repeat this exercise five times each in a clockwise and anti-clockwise direction. Next, repeat the process with the left thumb.
Vansh: Wonderful! This has been so relieving doctor. I was so tensed and thought the disease would be with me for my entire life.
